Current Projects

KHR has a number of ongoing projects. Our current projects are focused on maintaining our beloved 2141 steam locomotive, preserving railway history, and improving education and visitor experience.

Our current list of projects are as follows: (Click on each project for more details)

As a charitable organization, we need donations and volunteers for these projects to be successful.

2141 MAINTENANCE

Steam Locomotive 2141 Maintenance

Our dedicated team of volunteers are continuously working to maintain our steam locomotive.

Our beloved steam engine 2141 is one of the very few remaining in Canada that operates on an active CN line. As you can well imagine, parts, service and general maintenance on this 108 year old locomotive are incredibly costly and as this beautiful engine ages, the cost to keep it on the rails grows as well.

Help us to keep history alive and running!

We are looking for support in order to ensure this magnificent engine remains right where it was always intended to be; on the rails carrying a train full of excited people.

Your donation will go towards the lengthy and never ending list that allows the 2141 to function including:

  • Firebox maintenance

  • Boiler maintenance and repair

  • Valve maintenance

  • Brake repairs

  • Generator repairs

  • A massive amount of smaller jobs that keep the 2141 functional.

As a non-profit we are always grateful for the generous support we receive. Any money received will go directly to this project and not be used in our general operations account.

EDUCATION & VISITOR EXPERIENCE

Education Program

Kamloops Heritage Railway Society's objective is to educate, entertain and enrich.  We are currently developing a number of programs to ensure we meet that objective.

Our Education Program will be primarily geared towards grades 2-7 but will have a flexible curriculum that can be adapted to any education level right through to university.  In order to develop the highest level of experiential learning for the youth of Kamloops and beyond, we are looking for assistance.

We are looking to convert a decommissioned passenger car (top picture) into an historic railcar schoolroom (bottom pictures).

This car will become a static space used to deliver our education program and double as an amazing display for all visitors to our Backshop facility.

ARCHIVE EXPANSION

Archive Expansion

At The Kamloops Heritage Railway we take our obligation as a steward of history and its artifacts very seriously. We are currently looking to expand our archive space to ensure we are able to preserve an immense amount of history and to be able to make that history is available to  generations to come.

This project involves expanding on our existing space, buying or building shelves, updating software, and acquiring adequate storage containers to ensure all documents and artifacts remain intact.

SPEEDER RESTORATION

SPEERER RESTORATION

The Prince George Railway and Forestry Museum generously donated this railway speeder to KHR!

Our goal is to restore this speeder to its former glory with a few minor modifications so that it will become operational again. KHR hopes to eventually provide speeder rides to all of our visitors. The speeder will be modified, along with two carts, to haul passengers.

Almost all of it components need to be replaced or refurbished. Including replacing its old worn out two stroke engine with a modern, quite, environmentally friendly electric one. Our goal is to have this speeder operational by this fall (Covid-19 dependent)
