The KHR Railway Heritage Park is the base of operations for the 2141 Steam Locomotive and our heritage passenger train. As such you may see steam up and train movements within the heritage park. During active train operations, some of the heritage park will be off limits but you will have a close up look from various, safe viewing points within the compound. There is approximately 1/2 mile of track that makes up our railyard including a tail track used to access the CN Okanagan Subdivision at mile 3.0. Once inside the compound, three sets of tracks are used to access the backshop and to store passenger equipment, a snow plow and a fuel storage tank car. The passenger equipment that is on display includes 1950's era passenger coaches, a caboose converted for passenger use, open-air 'Hayrack' cars, and a Cafe-Lounge Car. Our snow plow will also be open for viewing as part of your guided tour. Visitors are able to get a close up look at the 2141 and based on the work that is being done to her, may even be able to get up into the cab for pictures. The 2141 shares the space inside the building with an ongoing restoration project that is currently being conducted on a 1930 Parlour Car. A fully equipped machine shop, lunchroom and washrooms take up the remainder of the space. Outside of the backshop building, you will see various artifacts and equipment on display including a hand car, baggage cart, and various tools used to maintain track. See movie props used during movies and documentaries the 2141 has starred in and you will also have access to a replica BX stagecoach.
Many of the volunteers that helped to restore the 2141 over an 8-year period now take pride in showing her off and presenting the story of the restoration during a guided tour. Group sizes are kept small for safety while allowing for an intimate experience and conversation with visitors. It is during the guided tours when there is a strong possibility that visitors will be able to climb up into the cab of the locomotive for viewing and photographs. As the 2141 is a working locomotive, she may be off limits for close inspection at any given time for maintenance and steam up. Within the backshop area an ongoing restoration project is being worked on and visitors may be able to tour the 1930 Parlour Car depending on the nature of the work taking place at any given time. As the backshop contains a fully functioning machine shop, visitors should expect conditions that would be typical in this type of environment, i.e. some grease and oil on parts and machines and the smell that would accompany such conditions.
